The dramatic increase in incidences of malignant melanoma continue. All studies now show that regular accurate skin observation is the best method of detecting melanomas at an early stage, thus improving prognosis. As some 80% of melanomas arise on previously normal skin, just excising moles does not reduce the risk of melanoma developing. Commonly Asked QuestionsHow does it work? Using a computerised digital video camera, multiple images/photographs are taken of the patient's skin. The images are stored on a computer disk and repeated at desired intervals, e.g. yearly. The repeated images can be superimposed exactly on top of the stored image on the computer screen. By scanning in and out of the two images, any changes can be clearly detected on the computer. The computer can also align pictures next to each other, zoom in on a particular area. You will also see a doctor on each review appointment. Who needs imaging?
