Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation surgery has the purpose of either creating or restoring an aesthetically pleasing shaped breast in proportion with a woman’s torso. The procedure can be used to address sagging breasts, a loss of volume, or even to address a smaller breast size.
Depending on the problem the patient wishes to address, a different implant size can be used. To determine the best breast volume for your aesthetic goals, it is best to speak to an experienced health practitioner.
Breast enlargement (Breast augmentation / breast enhancement / ‘boob job’ / augmentation mammoplasty / dual plane implant/ subpectoral
It involves the placement of a ‘prosthesis’ or soft implant behind the breasts which results in a forward and upward projection. The aim is to enhance the beauty of the breasts which form some of the most important and attractive aesthetic lines of a woman’s body.
There are a few areas as to which the implant can be inserted. These are under the armpit, below the nipple, under the breast and through the belly button. Each surgeon prefers a different method that is why it is important to get a few opinions so that you can make a choice that you feel comfortable with.
Why Choose Dr Lanzer?
Dr Lanzer has been trained in the USA by surgeons with extensive experience and mostly uses the small incision in the inframammary fold, the natural crease under the breast.
As with all cosmetic surgery it is very important to get an understandable and informative consultation. It is especially important with breast augmentations and implants as there are so many different options for you to choose. You should know all the pros and cons before making a decision. Dr Lanzer explains the expected costs of this procedure.
At what age can you get a breast augmentation?
People of all ages can get breast implants. However, the skin elasticity in the breasts changes as we age and your doctor will let you know if implants are suitable. To change the breast size, one should always have a consultation with an experienced cosmetic surgeon.
Breast implants can also be combined with breast lift surgery where they cut away skin to lift the breast to make it look more perky and youthful. This is common at our breast augmentation Melbourne and breast augmentation Sydney clinics!
There are many types of breast implants available these are:
– Saline
– Polyurethane Foam Coated Brazilian Breast Implants
– Silicone
Many doctors have their favourite and choose to only use one or two types in their surgeries. Some doctors prefer silicone as they think they feel more natural where as some doctors prefer saline because it is a more natural substance. Dr Lanzer’s favourite implant is the saline implant placed under the muscle.
There are also two shapes of implants. The breast shape you can obtain are the Teardrop or the Round breast implant. The tear implant shape can often provide a more natural shape and it creates a slope in the breast which mimics the natural breast. The round implants create a higher profile with more volume at the top of the breast when compared to the tear shape. Your surgeon will help you to decide which option is best for you for your breast implant surgery.
Implant Placement
When going for your initial consultation for breast augmentation in Melbourne or Sydney, the decision on where to place your implants will be discussed. The implants can be placed either subglandular (above the muscle) or submuscular (under the muscle). This all depends on how much breast tissue you have, your nipple placement, the type of implant that you desire and how physically active you are. If you do not have much breast tissue then the implant is placed beneath the muscle. This is done so that the implant looks more natural.

Surgery
When undergoing breast augmentation with breast implants your procedure will be performed in a few hours. Usually it is just a day procedure and you can go home the same day however some doctors choose to have you stay overnight. Dr Lanzer has his own Day Surgery Centre fully dedicated to this type of surgery. After the procedure your breasts will be swollen and look quite high. As weeks go by, your breasts will drop to a more natural position and the swelling will subside. Your surgeon will give you a special bra to wear to wear for a 5-7 days. After that time has elapsed, you may go back to wearing your own bras.
Aftercare
Please note that all surgical procedures require the proper aftercare. It is recommended to speak to your cosmetic surgeon as well as your anaesthetist to ensure you have all the information you need after you have your silicone implants or other breast implants.
It is quite common for patients to experience some bruising and swelling after their breast surgery. Some discomfort is also to be expected when the general anaesthesia or the other anaesthetic wears out. Any discomfort post-procedure can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. However, in some instances your cosmetic surgeon can prescribe some pain medication for after the surgery.
Please note that it is not uncommon to experience changes in nipple sensation shortly after having your silicone gel implants. The same applies for other procedures that closely relate to breast implants, including the breast reduction.
Once your incisions have first healed you may put on a creams to help the healing process. The chest wall can still feel rather sensitive to this time, so it is important to use the appropriate products as recommended by your cosmetic surgeon or dermatology.
With some breast implants, you are required to massage the breasts every day for a few weeks. Your doctor will advise you whether or not you have to do this. With Tear Shaped implants you do not have to massage the breasts as this could turn the implant.
If your tear shape implant does turn you will need to go to your surgeon to try and turn it back either by squeezing the breasts or in some cases, surgery.
Recently some implants were brought over to Australia from France called PIP implants. These implants were found to be using a cheaper type of silicone gel which wasn’t the one that had been approved on its manufacturing licensing.
In some rare cases, your ability to breastfeed may be reduced after a breast implant procedure. Even though these instances are rare, this is something to factor into your decision.
Since every invasive procedure carries risk, it is important to speak to your cosmetic surgeon about the signs of complications you need to look out for. These can be discussed during your initial consultation.
With any surgery comes risk. Some of the risks for Breast Implants are:
Capsular Contracture: This is where there is tightening of the tissue capsule around the implant. This results in firmness and hardening of the breast. It is believed newer implants can reduce this risk but it still remains a possibility that will require further therapy.
Deflation: Leakage of the solution from a saline filled implant.
Infection, breast soreness, rippling of the implant and scarring.
An implant may not last forever and sometimes need revision or changing, this is referred to as revision surgery.
Scar tissue can also occur as a result from using a certain surgical technique. While scars can usually be hidden in the breast fold, it does depend on the type of incision used by your surgeon. A common incision technique used by cosmetic surgeons is the transaxillary incision, but more variations are out there.
A breast augmentation can be a solution for female patients who want to obtain a more feminine chest. Before a patient can obtain the treatment, they must be evaluated by an experienced surgeon, who can determine if breast augmentation is a viable treatment solution for them. However, even during this stage, the patient must make the right decision, because not all cosmetic surgeries can provide you with the quality services you expect. Always check the experience of your surgeon and look for online reviews before you decide on a specific cosmetic surgery. The more experience your surgeon has, combined with positive reviews, the more likely you will be happy with the results obtained from the procedure.
Please note that it is important to maintain a stable weight after the procedure. Weight loss could potentially cause complications and change the results obtained through treatment.
We do need to mention that results obtained from a breast augmentation vary from patient to patient. So, even though you can check before and after photographs on our website to get more insight into results that could be obtained through breast augmentation, your results will always be unique. If you are curious about the results you might obtain from the procedure, or want some clarification on how your body will change after the procedure, it is essential to speak to your cosmetic surgeon before you give your consent for the surgery. Only when you understand the procedure completely, can you minimize some of the risks that accompany breast augmentation. Therefore, never hesitate to ask questions.
