Cellulite is a dimpled appearance of the skin due to localised collection of fat and results from excessive fat together with fibrous bands that tend to pull the fat in at different points.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF CELLULITE?
There is no real cause of cellulite although some patients develop cellulite if they are overweight. There is a genetic tendency where cellulite can run in families.
AT WHAT AGE DO PATIENTS DEVELOP CELLULITE?
Cellulite can start at any age but usually starts after pregnancy or middle age.
No, men generally do not get cellulite.
WHERE DOES CELLULITE OCCUR?
Cellulite is especially seen on the outer thighs of females and on the back of the thighs. It can however occur in lots of other places.
WHAT ARE THE WAYS TO REMOVE CELLULITE?
Cellulite can be treated with non surgical devices. These devices all aim at heating and destroying some of the underlying fat and possibly causing some skin and fibrous tissue contraction. The first device that we used was ultrasound-related called the UltraShape. The ultrasound wave passes deep into the skin and has the desired effect on the fat. Radiofrequency can also help with cellulite. We use a device called the freeze and the VelaShape to tighten the skin and smooth the cellulite down. There is variable response to these devices.
More recently fat is frozen with devices like the cryolysis. This tends to cavitate and break up the fat cells.
Another device that has been used for cellulite removal is acoustic wave therapy. This is a device that uses sound waves to break the fibrous bands.
CAN LIPOSUCTION REMOVE CELLULITE?
Liposuction can sometime remove cellulite. However, liposuction is more for the fat bulging rather than the skin wobbling and bumpiness that one sees in cellulite. Sometime cellulite does go with liposuction if it is done in a careful controlled manner. Unfortunately, liposuction can actually cause cellulite or even make cellulite look worse. Generally speaking, doctors do not perform liposuction for cellulite but rather for the bulges particularly of the outer thighs.
DO ANY CREAMS HELP WITH CELLULITE?
I am unaware of any creams that could really have an impact on cellulite.
