WHY WOULD I NEED A DERMAL FILLER?
Dermal fillers have a role to replace volume that is lost from the dermis or sub-dermis of the skin. With aging and facial movement, the body absorbs collagen and fat therefore making the skin thinner. As a result of the thinning of the skin, wrinkles become more obvious. Also voluminous lips and cheeks have a youthful appearance. Once the tissue is reduced, patients have a more aged appearance.
WHAT IS THE DESIRED RESULT OF A DERMAL FILLER IN THE UPPER LIP?
The goal of a dermal filler in the lip is to create a more voluminous lip so it is not wrinkled and flat. Often, we will inject along the upper lip line to give a better shape. With aging of the lip, wrinkles develop on the upper lip which extend into the mouth. These are often called “bleeding of lipstick”. A dermal filler can reshape the lip to have a more youthful appearance. Sometimes we also inject the cupid’s bow in the centre of the lip to give a more feminine looking lip. The edges of the lip are called the marionette lines. Sometimes, this is another area where a dermal filler can be very effective.
Dermal fillers are also used on the cheeks. The fillers in this area are thicker and slightly more volume is used. The interesting feature that has developed over the last few years with increased knowledge is that by placing a filler in the cheeks, not only does it give a more youthful curvature of the cheek but it also elevates the fold between the cheek and the upper lip, known at the nasolabial fold.
Fillers can be used all over the face. This is known as a liquid face lift. By placing fillers just under the skin along the jaw line or around the eyebrows, a patient can expect a more youthful appearance.
HOW LONG DO FILLERS LAST?
Generally speaking, fillers last between 6-18 months. The deeper fillers last longer.
ARE THERE OTHER TYPES OF FILLERS THAT ARE INJECTED INTO THE DERMIS?
Yes, one of the most common fillers that we use is patient’s own fat. The fat cells are extracted through a mini liposuction and purified and cleaned before injecting. In some cases, we hyper-concentrate the fat with the patient’s own stem cells. This may enhance the longevity of the fat transfer.
DO I NEED A GENERAL ANESTHETIC FOR A DERMAL FILLER?
No. Dermal fillers are done while patients are awake. The new dermal fillers actually come with local anesthetic in the syringe so local anesthetic injections are also not required.
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE HAVE VERY LARGE DUCK-LIKE LOOKING LIPS?
This is when too much filler has been placed in the lip. Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon problem and it is important for the cosmetic surgeon to tell the patient when too much has been requested. An over-voluminous lip does not look attractive and in fact looks quite unusual.
WHAT AGE CAN ONE HAVE A DERMAL FILLER?
Dermal fillers can be done at all ages. People are starting to have fillers in their 20’s and can be done all the way until the 80’s.
DO MEN HAVE DERMAL FILLERS?
The most common area of dermal fillers for a man is the cheeks. Men age in the cheek area which can be a significant sign of aging.
DO DERMAL FILLERS GET COMBINED WITH OTHER TREATMENT?
Yes, dermal fillers can be combined with muscle relaxants and also skin rejuvenation. Combination of treatments gives the best overall results in our opinion.
