Before And After Photos Explained
A common question that is asked of me is, “How long will the results last for?” This photo seen above is a before and after photograph of a lady who is 63 years old when she had her eyelids treated with laser blepharoplasty. It is quite amazing to see that she looks so much younger now 7 years later when she is now at the age of 70 years old. This lady underwent laser blepharoplasty for removal of upper lid skin and also the fat bags and wrinkles around her eyelid with the contour erbium laser. The results have been long lasting. She looks significantly younger and healthier. She is very pleased with the results and is now considering having surgery on the lower part of her face.
Different procedures have different varying lengths of how long the results will last for. For instance, once the skin is removed from the upper eyelid, generally speaking, we could expect a very long-lasting result. The same thing applies for the lower lid fat bags. With regards to wrinkling around the eyes, a lot depends on further sun exposure and also the amount of smiling that creases and wrinkles the skin. This is where using a muscle relaxant injection can be of benefit to make the results last longer. With regards to laser resurfacing of the face, sometimes if there has been a lot of significant sun damage, the wrinkling can recur slightly, but generally I have found very long results with deep laser resurfacing.
One of the areas that is hard to predict is face lift surgery. Sometimes I hear of a patient who had deep face lifts and they have only lasted for a couple of years. Other times it lasts for longer time. There is an ongoing gravity effect that is pulling the skin down together with facial movements and genetics. Patients who are having mini facelifts certainly would not expect to last as long as a deep face lift where deeper tissue is excised and removed. Even with a mini face lift however, there is cutting out of skin sometimes between 1 – 5 cm. This skin of course cannot re-grow.
One of the procedures that I have found to have a very long-lasting affect is liposculpture of the neck. Once the fat is removed and the fibrosis healing occurs, I have found that these results are extremely long-lasting. I did my first liposuction of the neck some 22 years ago. I have had the opportunity to have watched patients for a long period. The skin suture lift has a very variable long term results. Some patients have had 6 or 7 years with a nice affect. Others have found that even after 1 or 2 years the skin is relaxing. Very occasionally, this does require a maintenance treatment.
Since it is easy to maintain a suture lift, as long as patients are aware of this before hand, they are still acceptable that the results are not long-lasting. Liposculpture generally is a more long term effect so long as patients do not put on weight. If a person puts on weight then fat will recur. Sometimes it recurs regularly or around the edges. One of the most annoying affects of weight gain is that sometimes it is very deep like under the stomach muscle and that pushes everything out and changes the whole appearance of the results. Keeping one’s weight static is very important with liposculpture. For this reason, Dr. Lanzer has all patients speak to a nutritional dietitian and stresses the importance of keeping oneself healthy and well.
One of the factors that can help prevent aging is creams. There are a lot excellent cosmeceutical creams which contain vitamin A, vitamin C and anti-oxidants. These will also reduce further aging as of course does sun protection and sunblocks.
