WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACELIFT, MAKEOVER, AND EYE LIFT SURGERY?
A lot of terms are used loosely in cosmetic surgery to describe facial rejuvenation. Generally, a makeover is a facelift to elevate the drooping of the skin. Laser resurfacing is used to treat the skin texture and a laser blepharoplasty to treat the aging around the eyes.
HOW DOES A PATIENT DECIDE WHETHER THEY NEED ONE OF THE 3 PROCEDURES DESCRIBED?
Facelift is performed when the skin is sagging off the bone structure. This is typically noticed as squaring of the lower face as in jowls. An ideal face has an oval appearance where there is a natural curvature from the forehead around the temples and lower cheeks and chin. With aging, heaviness develops on the lower part of the face. It is almost like looking at a triangle with the point downwards when one is young and gradually, the opposite happens with the triangle pointing upwards as one is older. Many patients will understand that they need a facelift if they like the appearance when they push their skin towards their ear.
Laser resurfacing is required when the skin texture changes such as with the development of fine wrinkles or blotchiness.
Eyelid surgery is required when the eyes look tired or there is heaviness of the lower lid. This also includes wrinkling of the skin.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EYELID SURGERY AND FACELIFT SURGERY?
The eyelid surgery is performed with laser. The CO2 laser cuts and seals the blood vessels and is ideal for the fine skin around the eyes. The incision is made deep in the crease of the upper eyelid so that in most patients, it is not visible in the long term. The laser in a cutting mode does not have a lot of benefit in face lift surgery. There are a number of different types of face lifts. Dr. Lanzer specialises in the mini facelift where a small incision is placed around the ear. By placing the incision in the natural folds and dents of the ear, there is usually not obvious scarring.
WILL I BE ABLE TO KEEP MY EYELID AND FACELIFT SURGERY A SECRET?
It is interesting that most patients can keep surgery a secret even from close friends. Most patients do not notice the specific aging on a person and when the surgery is completed, patients just look fresher and younger.
HOW MANY YEARS YOUNGER WILL I LOOK AFTER MINI FACE LIFT AND LASER BLEPHAROPLASTY?
Generally, the reduction of age is between 10 and 15 years. However some patients can look even 20 or 25 years younger.
WHAT ARE THE MAIN AGING SIGNS AROUND THE EYES AND FACE THAT CONTRIBUTE TO AN AGED APPEARANCE?
People look old when they have wrinkling, particularly around the eyes and mouth, when the eyelid skin sags down so that one cannot see the upper eyelid, or when there is sagging and drooping of the skin as seen on the cheeks. The neck also contributes enormously to an aged appearance. When there is no strong definition between the chin and the neck, one has an aged appearance.
DOES AGING RUN IN THE FAMILY?
Yes. Some people notice that their family tends to age more frequently. However, the main factor with aging tends to be sun exposure. Fair skinned patients often age worse because they are affected more by the sun than an olive skinned person.
WHAT IS DR. LANZER’S EXPERIENCE IN EYELID AND FACELIFT SURGERY?
Dr. Lanzer has been performing eyelid laser surgery since the inception of lasers over 20 years ago. He has performed many thousands of cases of both CO2 and erbium laser around the eye. Dr. Lanzer spent many years performing suture facelift and offers the mini surgical facelift.
WHY WOULD A PERSON CHOOSE A MINI FACELIFT AS OPPOSED TO A DEEP FACE LIFT?
Some patients do not want that stretched pulled effect of a deep facelift and are happy with just a more natural result. Generally, the results of a mini face lift are those comparable to pushing the skin towards the ear. The mini face lift only elevates and undermines about 5 cm in front of the ear so that there is less risk of swelling of the face as the lift only goes down to the outer muscles. There is also less risk of nerve damage.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE SURGERY?
Dr. Lanzer is very thorough and wants patients very prepared for surgery. Therefore, he insists on a personal consultation with himself and also one with his nurse. Detailed consent forms are also given to the patients. Most patients also require a consultation with a psychologist and a dietitian. In this way, Dr. Lanzer feels that all patients are very prepared for the surgery.
IS DR. LANZER CONTACTABLE AFTER SURGERY FOR THE FACE AND EYELID?
Yes. Dr. Lanzer supplies all patients with his personal pager and can be contacted at any time of the day.
