Face Lift – How Old?
One of the most common questions I get asked is:
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO PERFORM A FACE LIFT?
The answer really is that it depends on what is bothering the person and if it warrants a face lift. Sometimes, it is just a small area of drooping or sagging which can be corrected with one of the facial fillers or skin tightening procedures such as Ulthera or Viva. Once there is actual drooping of the skin then it may require lifting of that skin. Sometimes, it is more of a volume effect and stem cell fat transfer would also be appropriate.
WHY WOULD A 77-YEAR-OLD LADY WANT A FACE LIFT?
This is a very interesting question. Some 15 years ago I was featured on nearly every media form in Australia and in Europe with a patient who was 74 years old who had had cosmetic surgery with myself. People often wonder why a 70-year-old person would want to have surgery. Of course things have changed a lot over the years and in fact it is quite common for older patients to seek cosmetic surgery. People live longer and are healthier and want to still look well and attractive.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FACE LIFT AND A NECK LIFT?
Some patients have drooping of the skin of their lower face which presents as wrinkles on the cheeks and prominent jowls and also folds around the mouth. Other patients actually have wrinkling and looseness of the neck which can also change the angle of the jaw and neckline. In this lady there was a combination of problems and this was corrected with a combined face and neck lift.
WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE LIPOSCULPTURE?
The liposuction not only removes the fat in the neck but is also numbs and closes the little blood vessels that are in the neck and face so that there is less risk of bleeding and bruising. We use the tumescent technique which was developed by a dermatologist and is so important in liposculpture.
WHAT IS THE RISK OF NERVE DAMAGE WITH MINI FACE LIFT?
As the mini face lift does not involve going under the muscle layer of the face, called the SMAS, the risk of nerve damage in a more long term nature is quite low. Liposculpture around the jowls can be associated with effects on the nerve of that area but this is usually of a temporary nature.
WHAT OTHER PROCEDURES CAN BE COMBINED WITH THE FACE LIFT?
Face lift can be combined with other skin rejuvenation treatment to make the skin cleaner and tighter. A lot of patients who have face lifts also have their eyes done. An eye may involve actually lifting of the brows as in a brow lift or just doing a blepharoplasty to treat the skin of the eyelids.
DO THE LIPS NEED TO BE TREATED WITH FACE LIFT?
A lot of people who have face lifts also have thinning around the mouth. There are a lot of nice fillers now that can enhance the lip appearance and these all add to the final result of the mini face lift.
