Facial Rejuvenation Case Study By Dr Daniel Lanzer
This facelift case study was taken from a 65-year-old woman, who had a facelift at our clinic. The after photographs are taken 2 weeks post-surgery. An interesting question is, “What is the patient’s age and their predicted age?”
What Features Contribute To A Patient’s Estimated Age?
It is amazing how patients can look completely different from their actual chronological age. The pre-operative photo of this lady would suggest that she was in her 70s and possibly 80s. The main features that one can see that contribute to this estimated age are the very heavy eyelids, where we cannot see any of the upper lids due to the heavy skin and fat that surrounds the upper eyelids. She also has diffused wrinkling, particularly around her mouth and chin, which is a sign of age.
Finally, there is no neck definition and a lot of wrinkling and looseness around the neck and jowl line due to sagging. These features combined, tend to create an image that the patient is in her 70s or possibly 80s. In fact, her age is 65.
How Does The Facelift Improve These Signs Of Ageing?
The post-operative photographs show that already at 2 weeks she has got an extremely well-defined neck with a sharp angle. There is elevation and tightness of her cheeks. Her eyes have been opened. Her skin is smooth, clean, and refreshed. Makeup at this stage would really enhance the results. Makeup is always very important post-surgery as it protects from further sun damage and enhances the results. Makeup on fresh, smooth, lasered skin looks nice. Makeup on wrinkled skin is often very hard to smooth over.
Interestingly, this lady feels that she looks “20 years younger”. It is a personal, subjective thought, but Dr Lanzer states that 25 years is a realistic estimation of her age appearance based on the features which we have discussed. This lady in fact wanted to kiss the surgeon, which is often a normal reaction from patients. She was informed that due to medical board guidelines, we do not kiss the doctor, but a mere thank you is all that is required. It is interesting that patients can get very enthusiastic and personally happy from having cosmetic surgery. It gives them back their youthful appearance.
Can I Get A Facelift At 30?
Getting a facelift at 30 is almost never recommended; this because patients still have good skin elasticity and strong muscles around the face. For that reason, Dr Lanzer rarely recommends getting a facelift at 30. While there can be some exceptions for a facelift at 30, these are exceedingly rare in the world of cosmetic surgery. Being in your early 30s means you have less dramatic options available to you, as your skin is still in excellent condition.
A facelift procedure can address problems such as sagging skin and other issues related to the natural ageing process. Evidently, most of these signs are not present yet when someone is 30 years old. Instead of getting a facelift at 30, Dr Lanzer can advise some non-surgical treatments; this may include laser rejuvenation, Dermapen, and other treatments that do not involve incisions.

Is It Possible To Combine A Facelift With Other Skin Rejuvenation Procedures For The Face And Neck?
There are some cases where Dr Lanzer recommends an additional treatment in combination with the facelift. For example, laser resurfacing is a complementary treatment that could be obtained. The treatment strategically removes certain skin layers, forcing the body to produce more collagen. Naturally, this leaves the skin smoother and more radiant.
Other treatments can also be combined with the facelift, so the facial rejuvenation treatments you obtain will be subject to the outcome you want. For example, someone who wants to reduce visible signs of ageing around the eyes will require a different set of treatments than someone who wishes to rejuvenate the entire face.
If an additional treatment is required to achieve the aesthetic results you want, Dr Lanzer can make this recommendation during your pre-operative consultations. So, be sure to convey what you want to achieve to Dr Lanzer, after which he can determine if this goal is realistic and which treatments will enable those results.
