Case Study 7: Breast Reduction Surgery
Liposuction breast reduction is a common procedure designed to remove fat from the breasts in order to reduce the size and shape of the breasts, or in other words, to make the breasts smaller, firmer and lighter. Some of the reasons for considering cosmetic surgery on the breasts might include:
– Reducing chronic back pain, health and medical problems associated with large or disproportionate or heavy breasts;
– Contouring and improving the shape of the breasts and displaying a more youthful look;
– Developing a more balanced and proportionate figure through liposuction breast reduction; and
– Improving confidence levels through an improved self-image and eliminating discomfort, embarrassment & self-consciousness.
Breast Reduction can be performed by one of two methods. The reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure where the surgeon removes excess breast tissue and skin and repositions the nipple and areola. There is a scar all the way around the areola of the nipple, a vertical scar from the nipple down to the fold below the breast and a scar across the breast. In very large drooping breasts, this is an appropriate procedure.
Fortunately, using the tumescent technique and the latest method such as the MicroAire can allow cosmetic surgeons to perform a breast reduction with liposuction alone.
Can This Surgery Be Performed While Awake?
Yes, the procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic or whilst one is asleep. There is a stinging sensation as the local anaesthetic numbs the fat.
Patients undergoing breast reduction to reduce their breast size usually have the option between local or a general anaesthetic. However, more complex procedures; for example, in patients with extremely large breasts where a significant amount of fat must be removed, may require the use of a general anaesthetic.
How Long Does The Procedure Take?
Normally, the actual surgical part of breast reduction takes under an hour. That being said, it is sometimes difficult to estimate the duration of a surgical procedure. Every patient will have a treatment that is tailored to them, so the actual treatment time can vary from this estimate.
What Is The Method That Makes This Treatment Effective For Neck And Should Pain Relief?
Fat is removed from all layers of the breast by angling the canula into different directions. The fat is smoothly removed.
Removing the weight in the breasts, in turn, takes the pressure off the neck and shoulders. Improved Posture. Reduces pain.
Why Does The Breast Contract And Elevate And Not End Up Drooping?
This is the most common concern of patients when considering breast reduction. Most people would assume that when removing the fat, the breast would just end up drooping. If one has a look at the before-and-after photographs of this patient, one can see an immediate contraction and elevation. The reason the skin contracts is that the breast is now much lighter, the fat has been removed and also specialised treatment on the dermis and fat causes skin tightening and contraction. This is all enhanced by compression garments. There is an immediate lift and elevation, particularly once the swelling has passed.
How Many Days Until I Will See A Result?
The photograph shown here is an amazing result and certainly not everybody gets a result as quick as this patient. This result was already visible a week after surgery. She virtually has no bruising or swelling and has an immediate contraction and elevation and has dropped down multiple sizes within a week.
Usually there is swelling and bruising, and this has to pass over the first couple of weeks. The full results can take 6 months to occur.
What Procedures Can Give Such Quick And Dramatic Results?
It is interesting that a lot of patients are looking today for procedures that don’t have a long downtime. That is why non-surgical facelifts and non-surgical forms of fat reduction are performed.
Generally speaking, cosmetic surgeons and Dermatologist surgeons are tending to perform more procedures with low downtime and quicker recovery. Liposculpture of areas such as the stomach and breasts have an advantage over cutting such as tummy tuck or mammoplasty because there are no long scars that require healing. Naturally, there is much smaller scarring as principally, it is a keyhole surgery. Patients who have excessive skin, do require surgery and that is when we would look at things like the lipo tummy tuck.
What Size Breasts Can Be Treated With Liposuction Alone?
All sizes of breasts have been treated by me over the last 15 years with liposuction alone. I have performed the procedure on size G and H and still obtained excellent results. Obviously, one’s expectations vary if the breasts are that large.
Are There Limitations In Breast Reduction Through Liposuction?
The only limitation is that in some young teenagers or people who are in their 20’s before pregnancy, may not have a lot of breast and the breast is made up of a lot of breast glandular tissue in which case, there is a limitation of how much fat can be removed.
The other limitation is that patients who have had previous breast cancer, would need specialised monitoring through a breast cancer surgeon. Also, a family history of breast cancer is something that needs to be considered and often those patients are referred to a surgeon beforehand, just so that long-term monitoring can occur.
Is There Anything I Can Do To Enhance The Results?
Yes, wearing a compression garment to keep the nipple elevated and pushed up will certainly enhance the long-term results.
Please note that all patients will receive some post-operative guidelines from our clinic; this includes valuable information about your recovery. We recommend that all patients read thing information thoroughly.
