How Does Breast Reduction Surgery Lift Heavy Breasts?
How Does Breast Reduction Surgery Lift Heavy Breasts?
There are many different aspects to the breast reduction liposuction lift and breast surgery overall, whether it is performed by liposuction or by another surgical procedure such as a reduction mammoplasty. Patients seek cosmetic surgery to have lighter and smaller breasts, but often there is a request and desire to have a breast lift at the same time.
During the patient evaluation, a doctor must look at not only the size and shape of the breast, but also at the location of the breast tissue and skin. Sometimes, there may be drooping of the breast; this can occur in ways, either with a full droop where the nipple and areola are pointing downwards and sitting well below the inferior mammary fold (the fold below the breast), or it may be that the nipple and areola are sitting at the correct height with the breast tissue sagging inferiorly on the lower pole of the breast. In these situations, a lift is required.
Do I Need A Surgical Lift Of The Breasts If My Large Breasts Are Drooping?
Fortunately, when performing a breast reduction liposuction lift, we can induce a skin contraction that translates to an elevation and lift of the breast.
Patients often find it difficult to understand how liposuction alone, which reduces the breast size, can cause a lift, because normal logic would be that once removing the fat, the breast in fact would sag and droop almost like an empty bag. This was also our big question in the year 2000, when I started to perform the breast reduction liposuction lift. At that time, there was nobody else who had performed the procedure in any large study, so we really did not know the answer.
I am very grateful for the hundreds of patients on who I performed breast reduction liposuction lift early in those days, as they understood that it was a new procedure and we could not really tell how much lifting would occur following the liposuction. The good news was that the skin retracted and tightened in the way that I predicted. By removing large volumes of fat through many thousands of small canals, one can induce a breast lift; this happens because the empty canals close. The canals close because the skin is made up of collagen and elastin that tightens and retracts. This is enhanced by the method of liposuction and by wearing tight compression garments that help the skin contract inwards and upwards.
There are some instances where overweight can cause enlarged breasts in women, for which weight loss is the first line of treatment. If the breasts are still too large after weight loss, or when there is too much glandular tissue opposed to fat, then the patients can still choose a breast reduction procedure to alter the size of the breasts further.
How Much Breast Lift Can One Hope For Following Breast Reduction With Liposuction?
The amount of lifting does vary between patients; this is because all breasts are different. Some breasts are more fibrous, some are fattier. Some breasts are saggier, and others are perkier. In all cases, I found that the breast lift does occur. In some dramatic cases that may be 10-15 cm of a lift, whilst in others it may just be a few centimetres after other surgery.
In What Way Does One See The Breast Lifting After The Liposuction Breast Reduction?
The first thing that one notices is that the nipple often will not be pointing as far downwards to the ground, but rather point more anteriorly forward on the breast; this gives a better cosmetic appearance. I prefer the natural result of a breast lift through liposuction opposed to the cutting, which sometimes puts the nipple too anteriorly. During the latter procedure, a surgeon removes excess breast tissue to alter the size and shape of the breast. However, such procedure can be accompanied by a larger scar.
The second way that one will see the breast lift is that the breast tissue will be higher than previously. Sometimes, one can identify or look for a mole or freckle on the upper stomach and compare the position of the lower breast before undergoing breast reduction and then after surgery to really understand just how much lifting occurred with the liposuction reduction.

Are There Special Tools That You Use For The Reduction Procedure?
I like the MicroAire device for breast reduction, as I find that it produces maximum fat removal and skin tightening. MicroAire is a vibrating cannula that moves swiftly and evenly between the breast fibrous bands; this to remove the underlying fat.
How Does One Make Sure That The Breast Reduction With Liposuction Lift Is Even With The Liposuction Method In Question?
The most important thing is for the dermatologist/surgeon to correctly assess the removal of fat. Fat is removed in multiple layers throughout the breast, constantly moving and keeping the removal even and symmetrical.
While the aim of breast reduction is reducing the size and weight of the breasts, subsequently tackling problems such as neck and shoulder pain, there are additional factors that will be considered by your cosmetic surgery. Of course, one of the most important factors is creating a natural result the patient is happy with.
Do You Ever Perform A Breast Reduction And Lift On One Breast?
Yes. We often see a significant asymmetry between the two breasts. I have seen patients with a very large droopy breast on one side and a normal breast on the other. I would treat the abnormally large and drooping breast just with the liposuction reduction method to reduce the volume and attain a retraction. Often that is all that is needed to get the patient more symmetrical. Patients are never totally symmetrical, but we want them to look more like sisters rather than twins. Of course, the breasts will never be dramatically different. Occasionally, these procedures are also done with a liposuction reduction in one breast and an implant in the other.
Will A Breast Implant Augmentation Cause A Breast Lift?
Breast augmentation gives the illusion of a breast lift. By filling up the volume, the nipple usually moves forward and upwards, and therefore the breast appears more balanced. In real terms, it is not a true lift as no skin has been cut out and excised. Some patients who have a breast implant have a breast lift. However, some patients choose to have this procedure later.
As mentioned in some of our previous sections, a procedure is very much dependent on the patient; this includes the patient’s requirements as well as the aesthetic problems with the breast that present themselves. Based on a combination of those factors, a cosmetic surgery can determine the best technique to use.
What Is The Effect Of The Breast Lift On Back Pain And Shoulder Pain?
I found it very interesting looking at the posture of my patients who come in for breast reduction liposuction lift. Very often, they have a curved shoulder and one can see that the weight and the sagging of the heavy breast is causing a postural change that leads to the pain.
By performing the liposuction, and getting a reduction in weight and volume, the breast tissue contracts and elevates. The whole breast complex on the front of the chest also becomes lighter. The breast does not sit as low, and because of this, the shoulders tend to straighten up.
The big surprise to me was that when we did our initial study of 250 patients, they noticed that the pain in the back and shoulders went immediately. It was not like they had to wait months or years. This clearly points out that some patients do have a problem of heavy breasts, which is almost like carrying bricks around with them all the time. Relieve the weight and the position of the breast, and there is an immediate improvement.
Please note that patients should avoid certain heavy activities shortly after their procedure until their body has recovered. These heavy activities include but are not limited to heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. However, light walking is recommended to prevent complications post-surgery.

Does The Breast Lift Carry Any Risks?
Any invasive procedure carries risks. Even though cosmetic surgerys will attempt to reduce these risks as much as possible, there is always some degree of risk present. During your initial consultation, your cosmetic surgery can elaborate on these risks and you will have the opportunity to ask questions.
Potential risks associated with a breast reduction and/or breast lift includes changes in nipple sensation, uneven breast volume, haematoma, infection, complications due to the use of a general anaesthetic, and an inability to breastfeed.
Patients should expect some side-effects after a breast reduction or a breast lift. Common side-effects include bruising and swelling, as well as some discomfort. Any pain experienced post-surgery can be managed by over-the-counter pain medication.
