Today I was referred a patient who had a tummy tuck in China and has some in very upset and feels that the procedure was not done properly. In fact the patient only had a small area of excess fat on the outer edges of the scars. This is not an uncommon issue with tummy tuck/abdominalplasty. The plastic surgeon excised the stomach which can push a little bit of the skin out to the sides. Sometimes a small liposuction is performed at the same time on the edges or done afterwards. In this case a small corrective Liposuction will bring the excess tissue in therefore it is not as disinterest as the patient had considered. It does raise an interesting issue that does often we see patients that are unhappy with surgery at other places.
It is very important for the cosmetic surgeon, Dermatologist or plastic surgeon to always try and obtain the first pre surgery photos of the patient. It is very easy to be critical of other surgeons but one really needs to understand what the initial position clinically, what was the problem, how was it assessed, what was the patient warned about and how was it treated. Once armed with all that information a Doctor can give a proper informed opinion about what it the best way to go, and if something has been done wrong. It is a natural inclination that most surgeons want to boohoo another surgeon but of course this is quite wrong unless one really understands the case. Sometimes a surgeon may not actually perform the ultimate best procedure because the patients at the time did not want to undergo a bigger operation or did not want to spend the money and they have had a modified procedure. In this situation the results will also be more modified. One of the more important things in keeping patient satisfaction is to stay in contact with patients. Dr Lanzer is very hands on and sees his patients himself. They are seen one day later, on week later, one month later and often for many months later.
For interstate patients he recommends that they send him emails very frequently. It is very important that patients look back at there pre operative photographs and understand how they looked before and what they have obtained. Patient education is the essence of having a happy patient. The general statement has always been that any information given before the procedure is information any information given after the procedure is just an excuse. Dr Lanzer has a very thorough approach, he likes to see patients twice, consult them and have his nurse consult them and gives extensive literature to read.
