Case Study: Mega Liposuction Before And After Photos
This is a 60 year old lady who has had a large volume Liposuction on her stomach. Age is a very interesting topic of discussion as to what age patients should have or could have Liposuction. There is a genetic form of fat accumulation which one can see already in teenagers. This is often in the outer thighs and buttocks. Generally speaking Plastic and Cosmetic surgeons prefer not to perform cosmetic surgery in teenagers as the body is still growing and changing and there is the issue of consent. Someone under the age of eighteen may not be fully informed and be able to give proper consent to a procedure even with the parents consent and an agreement from a local doctor. There are exceptions and Dr Lanzer would always insist that the patient has a lengthy discussion with a general practitioner and an appropriate psychologist. Once the patient is eighteen then Liposculpture is more appropriate. There are different groups that have Liposuction are the following.
Firstly patients have it from the time that they are eighteen to middle aged. Often this is a genetic issue or excess fat that cannot be removed with dieting. After pregnancy different issue arise such as a large stomach which does no go, or large breasts that can develop. Sometimes in these situations a surgical approach is required such as the Lipo/Tummy tuck. Middle age which today could be classified from 40’s to 60’s is also a common age to have Liposuction. Finding the time and the ability to preform exercise gets harder and it seems easier to keep weight on. Liposculpture is now relatively safe and older patients can have this procedure. The most interesting group of patients are those who are aged between 60-80. Very commonly these patients do have Liposuction.
Their goal is not necessarily to look good in a two piece bikini but to feel more comfortable in their clothes. Dr Lanzer has found this a very regarding area and patients are very happy to have fat removed. This can be performed on multiple areas of the body and commonly older women do seek a breast reduction through Liposuction alone. Liposuction has the advantage that it is essentially through keyhole surgery so there are no large cuts required or the need for stitches. This makes the procedure more attractive, particularly to older patients as well. An interesting question that Dr Lanzer is often asked is “since I’m older will my skin contract” Dr Lanzer’s personal experience has been that older skin which is thinner and finer retracts extremely well and sometimes better that younger thicker skin. He especially sees this on the neck when the sculpturing can produce a very sharply defined neck shape. Also breast reduction leads to a breast contraction elevation as does Liposuction on the stomach.
The photograph in this case study was a 60year old lady that had a lot of fat on her stomach. Performing large volumes of Liposuction on older patients need extra care as one does not want to over stress the other organ in the body. In this case a couple of litres of fat were removed from her stomach and it highlights how amazing the skin can contract. There was no excision or cutting of the skin, yet the big bulges have totally retracted. Skin retraction occurs due to closure of the multiple canals produced through Liposuction together with collagen, dermal and elastic tightening. Dr Lanzer is a dermatologist who specialises in understanding skin and he has always been amazed at how the skin can retract. There was no necessity for a tummy tuck procedure in this case.
