WHY ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TUMMY TUCKS?
There are different methods of how to perform a tummy tuck. The method that dermatologists have helped contribute to is the tumescent lipotuck. This involves performing a tumescent liposuction initially before going ahead with the tummy tuck. The main advantage is that the fat is removed first with a technique that has a very low risk of bleeding. After that, the skin can be removed. Also there are different types of tummy tucks depending on how severe the problem is. In the photo seen above, the patient had a significant of loose overhang of the skin that needed to be removed together with separation of the stomach muscle. This means that the procedure is performed in layers. First of all, the deeper muscle is sutured together followed by the removal of all the lose skin, replacement of the umbilicus and closure.
WILL ONE SEE THE SCAR FOLLOWING A TUMMY TUCK?
Generally, the surgeon tries to keep the scar very low down, below the bikini line so that it is not visible in bikinis or underpants. There is always a scar. The scar is initially red and in time it fades.
WILL A PERSON ALWAYS LOOK BETTER FOLLOWING A TUMMY TUCK IN CLOTHES?
Yes, the tummy tuck will improve the appearance in clothes as the bulging and looseness will be gone. Some patient can also look better in bikinis but that can never be promised because of the extent of the scarring.
CAN LIPOSUCTION BE PERFORMED AT THE SAME TIME AS TUMMY TUCK?
Besides the liposuction in the area of the tummy tuck, we may also perform liposuction in other areas such as hips and thighs. This will depend on the areas that are of a concern.
DOES THE UMBILICUS ALWAYS HAVE TO BE REMOVED?
No the umbilicus is not removed if one is only performing a mini tuck of the lower stomach. This decision will ultimately be made by Dr. Lanzer at the time of surgery.
WILL ONE LOSE WEIGHT WITH TUMMY TUCK?
There is usually a small amount of weight loss but ultimately it is depends on how much skin and fat is actually removed.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS WITH TUMMY TUCK?
Tummy tuck is associated with normal risks of surgery which include bleeding bruising and swelling. There is the long scar along the lower abdomen as well. Dr. Lanzer will discuss these risks with you in full.
