Tumescent Liposuction Before & After (Vaser Liposuction):

In the early 1990’s, Dr Lanzer was one of the first cosmetic surgerys to begin using tumescent fluid in liposuction procedures. The beauty of using tumescent fluid is that liposuction procedures can now be done under a local anaesthetic, rather than having a full general anaesthetic; this minimises the recovery period for patients. The tumescent fluid is made up of normal Saline solution with adrenaline and local anaesthetic. The adrenaline helps to constrict the blood vessels, meaning there is minimal blood loss from this procedure. This reduces complications post procedure and eliminates the need to perform blood transfusions.

Why Is a Tumescent Solution Used During Liposuction?

The local anaesthetic enables us to be able to perform the suctioning without the patient feeling too much discomfort. It also works as a pain reliever, including for patients waking up from a general anaesthetic.

The amount of tumescent fluid is carefully calculated according to the patients’ weight to ensure a safe amount is administered. It is not uncommon to use a few litres of this fluid per patient. The fluid is what oozes out over the first 24-48 hours after the procedure. It comes out as a pale red cordial colour and patients are warned that they may want to lay some towels on their bed for the first night. Our nurses will cover all incision sites with absorbent dressings, so the amount of excess leakage is usually minimal.

Can the Tumescent Fluid Cause Any Side-Effects After the Procedure?

In larger patients with bigger stomachs, there is the risk of a seroma forming, which is basically a collection of fluid. We minimise this risk not only by applying the compression garment, but also by applying a binder for the first 5 days post operatively. We may also bandage the area. Patients are told not to elevate their blood pressure in the first few days post procedure as this can also affect a seroma forming.

How Can a Patient Enhance the Healing Process?

There are several things patients can do to enhance the healing process after a tumescent liposuction. Detailed instructions will be provided by The Dr Lanzer Clinic and the patient can also receive some medication to manage pain or prevent infection.

Patients should not do any strenuous exercise during their recovery. However, it is advised to do some light walking, as this can prevent complications and stimulate the healing process at the same time.
