Case Study 11: Female Breast Reduction Surgery
The patient in question had a breast reduction many years ago. Eleven years later, she is having liposuction of other areas but has noted that the breast reduction to a size C has lasted for this period of time. One can notice the amount of skin contraction and elevation just from the surgical procedure alone; no skin was removed; this was not a breast surgical lift.
What Is The Difference Between A Reduction Mammoplasty And Breast Reduction With Liposuction?
During a reduction mammoplasty, the surgeon removes excess breast tissue and skin. He can also remove fat during this procedure and reposition the nipple and areola to a location that is more suitable for the new size and shape of the breasts. Naturally, this kind of procedure requires larger incisions to gain access to the treatment area.
In most cases, Dr Lanzer will choose the breast reduction with liposuction. During this procedure, Dr Lanzer only makes a few small nicks to gain access to the area. Excess fat is removed from large breasts, enabling you to go down a breast size or two.
How Long Do Procedure Results Last For?
Generally speaking, liposuction lasts forever, as so long as the patient does not put on weight; this applies to liposuction of all different areas such as on the body and also with this breast procedure.
By removing the fat cells, fat does not tend to come back. If a patient puts on weight, it will tend to come in other areas. Large breasts are not so much related to fat of the general body and therefore fat fluctuation does not always mean that breasts will become fatter or less with age or time.
What Procedures Have Long-Term Results Following Cosmetic Surgery?
Laser resurfacing of wrinkles tends to last for many years. Once the new collagen is laid down. As so long as there is general sun protection, one can expect the results to last for many, many years.
Blepharoplasty with a laser, I found also lasts for a long time. It is unusual to have to repeat this.
Facelift surgery notoriously can need to be repeated, particularly if one is suturing the muscles, which can later stretch with facial movement. The areas that have been sucked out, such as through liposculpture of the neck or excision of the skin, would tend to be long-lasting.
Is There Any Particular Long-Term Risk Associated With Breast Reduction?
There are no major risks associated with breast reduction. There is a theoretical risk of affecting breast cancer monitoring with any breast cancer surgery, as it may affect mammograms where the breast will appear denser or contain areas of calcification.
Since starting this procedure in the year 2000 we have not seen any patient with any particular problem related to breast cancer monitoring. We will always ask patients if they have a history of breast cancer before proceeding with surgery for heavy breasts.
Why Do Some Patients Want Breast Reduction While Others Wish To Have Breast Enlargement?
This is an interesting question and it relates to how people perceive themselves and the type of breasts that they have. Many people are undergoing breast reduction do it because of the pain associated with the weight of large breasts, particularly neck and shoulder pain. Breast enlargement is more an aesthetic desire to have fullness of the breasts and to appear more feminine.
It is preferable to have a breast procedure performed by a reputable Dermatological surgeon, who is specially trained to perform this surgery and has a lot of experience in carrying out this type of surgery.
Dr Lanzer is an experienced surgeon and dermatologist, who has executed thousands of procedures during his career. Patients travel far and wide to benefit from his breast reduction with liposuction procedure.
