The method that Dr. Lanzer uses is a combination of tumescent liposuction with superficial liposculpture and devices such as MicroAire and Vaser liposculpture. Dr. Lanzer explains that the real success in skin contraction is based on his technique on how he sucks and from what levels he removes the fat. He will treat every patient differently, depending on the individual situation. A tummy tuck is sometimes required, but has the downside of a long scar all across the lower abdomen and much longer recovery. The tumescent liposculpture has the advantage of it being key-holed through small nicks in the skin. The patients will go through a period of deep bruising where the skin feels a bit hard. Massage or VelaShape will improve the texture and give a good result.
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF LIPOSCULPTURE IN THIS SITUATION?
Generally, the goal of liposculpture is to have a flatter stomach so that patients of this age can look better in clothes. They are not going to be wearing bikinis but the bulge is always pressing against their clothes making them feel uncomfortable and changing the type of clothes they need to wear. Once the fat is removed, then they are happier in clothes. The other bonus in this situation is that she actually has better skin, tighter and smoother.
WHAT IS THE AGE LIMIT WITH LIPOSCULPTURE?
This patient demonstrates that patients in their 60’s, 70’s, and sometimes 80’s do come in for liposculpture. Age is not a barrier with the new techniques as it is less invasive. Dr. Lanzer would not do a full body liposculpture in a patient in their 80’s. Someone in their 60’s could just about have most areas treated. Occasionally a patient in their 80’s will have an ECG just to check their heart function.
WHAT AGE CAN PATIENTS START TO HAVE LIPOSCULPTURE?
Dr. Lanzer can perform liposculpture in teenagers, but he usually waits until they are over 18 unless there is some severe genetic abnormality.
