Gynaecomastia: Causes and Treatments
A condition such as gynaecomastia can have many causes, so the treatment of this type of condition will depend on its cause. For example, if a patient is significantly overweight, the patient will have to lose weight to correct the problem.
Of course, certain cases of gynaecomastia are not caused by overweight. The problem can arise through genetics and even health problems, so the root of the problem must be determined before an appropriate treatment can be proposed.
Below, we have listed some of the common causes of gynaecomastia as well as the treatment options available. If you wish to learn more about this condition, please read the information provided by our team below.
What Can Cause Gynaecomastia in Older Men?
Gynecomastia in older males can be caused by using some drugs such as anabolic steroids, other health problems, or by medicines that are needed to treat some health problems. Overweight men can have ‘man boobs’, but these are due to fat deposits, not to growth of breast tissue.
Can Patients Obtain Other Treatments Apart from Male Breast Reduction to Enhance Results?
To improve the results of male breast tissue removal to treat gynecomastia, we commonly recommend a few sessions of the Velashape to be undertaken post-procedure. This is a machine used to perform deep massage and firms the skin around problem areas. It helps to work through deeper bruising and creates a smooth result. It suctions and massages at the same time, stimulating blood supply and healing to the area. This is commonly started at least 3 weeks after the patient’s treatment.
Patients wear a compression garment for two weeks full time and two weeks part-time after a male breast reduction. These garments are made from a Lycra material; this makes the garment light and easy to disguise under a t-shirt or shirt. It is comfortable and easy to put on and take off.
Are Photographs Taken at The Dr Lanzer Clinic Regarding This Procedure?
Dr Lanzer will take a set of photographs before your procedure. He will take some of you as is, and then once he has marked the procedure area with a blue surgical marker, he will take another set. These photos are used to show the area where Dr Lanzer will remove the fat and tissue. These photos are a great reminder to patients of how they looked pre-procedure. It is surprising how quickly we can forget how we looked in comparison to how the body looks post-operatively. Taking these before and after photos also allows us to match them up side by side, which is such a fantastic way for patients to see how far they have come in such a short time.
