Our eyes are windows to the soul, but also the first physical feature we look at on a person. Therefore eyelid surgery that rejuvenates the skin around the eyes plays a major role in both our appearance and the message it sends to others about ourselves.
Are eyes different?
Not all eyes are the same, there are many different shapes and sizes; deep set, wide set, almond shaped, protruding, monolid (Asian eyes), upturned and downturned eyes. Eyes play an important part in overall facial shape which can define a person’s attractiveness. A symmetrical and youthful face is desired. Around our eyes are often one of the first noticeable signs of aging which can also make us look tired; ageing can present as hooded/drooping eyelids, heavy brow, crow’s feet and fat bags under the eye.
What is the treatment ?
Dr Lanzer uses a method called blepharoplasty to freshen up the eye. In upper blepharoplasty the Co2 laser is used to cut the excess skin on the top eyelid. The Co2 laser is more precise and cauterises as it cuts the skin compared to the scalpel method. There is minimal scarring as the incision is made along the crease line of the eye. Sutures need to be removed 7-10 days later. Lower blepharoplasty the Co2 laser is used to cut the fat bags from the inside of the lower lid therefore no visible scarring. The result is a younger and much fresher looking eye.
What is the difference between a brow lift and a blepharoplasty?
Brow lift is required when the actual brow hair droops down onto the lid. A patient can see the results of a brow lift by pushing the Forehead skin upwards.
Dr Lanzer offers a Direct Brow lift where the incision is above the brow hair.
Do I need a facelift?
Facelift can enhance the appearance of the eyes by firming up the skin near the eyes. Some patients have the two procedures together.
Do I need to be asleep for a blepharoplasty?
Usually, Dr Lanzer offers a general anaesthetic and the eyes are covered with a protective shield.
There have been a number of significant breakthroughs in cosmetic procedures during the last 25 years.
The tumescent liposuction method that I helped bring to Australia in 1992 changed our approach to many procedures. The fluid numbs the area and stops bleeding. As a result, it allows us to perform liposculpture safely, full body liposculpture, man boob reduction, 6-pack high-definition liposculpture, a new form of mini face and neck lift and the lipo-tummy tuck.
The introduction of lasers in 1994 gave us a safer way to cut the skin which is required in laser blepharoplasty and also an accurate way to treat unwanted tissue such as blood vessels and pigmentation.
Laser resurfacing uses the erbium laser that is attracted to water to vaporise away wrinkles and scars.
Many non-surgical devices have enhanced the way we can treat the face and body. The Cool Shapes freezes fat and may lead to 30% reduction, the Viva radiofrequency helps tighten and smooth the skin, and the Energet allows us to rejuvenate skin surface.
The most common procedure in the world today are facial fillers and muscle relaxants that can really make a difference in how people age.
